A Transformative Journey: The Path to the Heart of the Earth
The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is a living sanctuary: the highest coastal mountain range on Earth, home to snowy peaks, tropical forests, sacred lagoons and an extraordinary diversity of life — more than 3,000 plant species, 500 birds and 120 mammals.
For the indigenous peoples who inhabit it, this territory is known as “the Heart of the World”. Here, everything is connected: water, stones, winds, animals and humans form part of a single, living body. When the Heart of the World is in balance, the rest of the planet can breathe.
This journey has been created in alliance with Mamo, spiritual leader of the Kogui people. The trail you will walk is not only a physical route through the mountains — it is a spiritual pathway designed as a teaching. At each stop, the landscape becomes a classroom: rivers, sacred stones and viewpoints are places of learning, silence and offering.
More than a trip, this is an invitation to remember what it means to live in relationship with the Earth.
What Makes This Journey Unique
Guided by a Spiritual Leader, Not Just a Guide
Most treks focus on the route, the challenge, the scenery.
This trail has been designed and guided by Mamo Bunkwa, a traditional authority of the Kogui people. You will hear directly from him about the meaning of the territory, the role of the Mamos, and the spiritual work they do to keep the Earth in balance.
Ancestral Wisdom as the Compass
Instead of rushing from one viewpoint to the next, we slow down. We learn how the Kogui see water, mountains and forests; why certain places are sacred; and what it means to care for the territory not as a “resource”, but as a relative.
The Sierra Nevada: UNESCO-Protected Sacred Territory
You are entering one of the most important ecological and spiritual regions on the planet, recognized by UNESCO as a Natural World Heritage site and considered a key territory for biodiversity, water and climate regulation.
Reciprocity, Not Extraction
This is not a trip to take from the territory.
It is a journey built around reciprocity: contributions support community-led conservation and cultural initiatives, and part of the experience includes simple, symbolic offerings of gratitude to the land.

Experience Flow – From Trek to Pilgrimage
Arrival & Welcome – Entering the Territory
You arrive at the foothills of the Sierra and are welcomed by members of the community and the Delzur team. We open the journey with a circle of intention: Why are you here? What brings you to the Heart of the World?
Meeting the Mamo – Listening to the Heart of the Earth
You meet Mamo Bunkwa, who shares the Kogui vision of the Sierra Nevada as the heart of the planet, and explains the invisible work that spiritual leaders do to maintain balance: caring for water sources, performing pagamentos (offerings) and maintaining harmony between humans and nature.
The Trail – Walking as an Act of Prayer
Guided by local guardians, you begin the trek. The pace is deliberate, inviting presence rather than speed. Along the way, the Mamo and community members share stories about:
-
Sacred places along the route
-
The significance of certain plants, stones and rivers
-
How climate change and external pressures are affecting the territory
-
What it means to be a “guardian of the world” today
Moments of silence are woven into the path, allowing you to listen — not only to words, but to the land itself.
Ceremonial Space – Remembering Our Place in the Web of Life
In a chosen place, the group gathers for a simple, grounded ceremony. This may include shared silence, guided reflection, traditional elements from the territory and an invitation to offer personal intentions for the healing of the Earth and of one’s own life, always within the boundaries set by the community.
Shared Meal – Nourishment from the Territory
You enjoy a meal prepared with local ingredients and traditional recipes, a way of honoring the people and ecosystems that make this experience possible.
Closing – Commitment and Reciprocity
We close the journey by reflecting on what each person is taking with them and what they choose to give back. Every participant is invited to carry a personal commitment – a concrete way to embody what was learned once back home.
